What’s new in this update
The recent Smart Documentation update focuses on simplifying documentation workflows while expanding automation for both fabrication and architectural use cases in Revit.
In this release, we’ve concentrated on three key areas:
Consolidation of Dimensioning Configurations. Two different Dimensioning interfaces have been merged into one, reducing the number of configurations to manage when working with Assemblies.
Performance improvements. Simplified dimensioning logic translates to faster loading times.
Expanded view creation capabilities: View automation now includes batch-created floorplans and support for Rooms and Spaces, making it easier to generate standardized views at scale.
These changes reduce setup time, simplify configuration management, and help teams produce reliable documentation faster.
Before you update: what to know
Before updating to the newest version of Smart Documentation, we recommend taking a few preparatory steps to ensure a smooth transition.
Back up your configuration files
This update modifies active configuration files. While backwards compatibility is possible, creating a copy of your configurations is strongly recommended.
Smart Assemblies, Smart Views, and Sort Mark are being retired
Their functionality is now fully available in Smart Documentation, which is included in all Be.Smart Collections and Suites at no additional cost. Read more .
To move from these tools to Smart Documentation, existing configurations must be converted to the new format. You can follow this guide to complete the migration.
Future updates will be delivered through Smart Documentation
The retired tools will remain available for a limited time, but new features and improvements - including this release - are available only in Smart Documentation.

Removal of the Dimensioning Rules:
simpler and more direct Smart Dimensions
Previously, Smart Documentation included two different dimensioning functionalities. One was the Dimensioning Rules, which you could assign to the Assembly Views being created. The other was Smart Dimensions, the newer and more capable method that continues to be improved.
In practice, this added unnecessary complexity. Users had to manage duplicate configurations, and dimensioning results could vary depending on whether Smart Dimensions were applied directly or through Dimensioning Rules.
With Smart Documentation newest version, Dimensioning Rules have been removed. Smart Dimensions can now be assigned directly to Assembly Views.
Why this change matters
Removing Dimensioning Rules simplifies the entire dimensioning workflow:
Fewer configurations to manage: Smart Dimensions no longer need to be wrapped inside additional rules.
More predictable results: Dimensions behave consistently when applied in active views or through Assemblies.
Better performance: Eliminating the extra processing layer improves loading times.
Clearer setup and maintenance: Configuration logic is easier to understand, review, and update.
All unique functionality that previously existed only in Dimensioning Rules has now been incorporated into Smart Dimensions, ensuring no loss in capability – only a simpler and more robust workflow.
Improved Text Note Positioning and Main Element Geometry dimensioning
With the removal of Dimensioning Rules, Text Note positioning settings have been moved directly into Smart Dimensions, where they are easier to access and manage.
These settings are available under Configuration Settings and give you more control over how dimension Text Notes are placed and formatted in your views.
These settings come from the now-retired Dimensioning Rules:
Text Note Positioning has not only has been migrated to Smart Dimensions, but also refactored to deliver more reliable and predictable results.
The default setting is “No Underlines”, meaning the result will match the usual behavior of Smart Dimensions. Additional options can be used when necessary.
These improvements help ensure that dimension annotations remain clear, consistent, and aligned with your documentation standards - without requiring additional configuration layers.
Transition from Dimensioning Rules to Smart Dimensions
Note: Remember to make a copy of your configurations before using the new version of Smart Documentation.
After the update, any Dimensioning Rules used in your Assemblies configurations are automatically replaced by the corresponding Smart Dimensions (the ones previously assigned to the Dimensioning Rules).
However, the Note Positioning settings from Dimensioning Rules are not transferred automatically to the corresponding Smart Dimensions. This means you will need to adjust your Smart Dimensions configurations to achieve the desired Text Note formatting.
This is a one-time adjustment. Once updated, your configurations will continue to work in the correct format going forward.
Main Element Geometry is now Global Geometry
As part of the transition away from Dimensioning Rules, Main Element Geometry settings have been moved into Smart Dimensions and are now called Global Geometry.
These settings are available under the Global Geometry tab on the left side of the configuration window. They allow dimensioning of geometry elements – such as cuts and openings - that are not separate families. For example, a CLT panel (Walls category) with a window opening and additional structural cuts:
As with Text Note positioning, Global Geometry settings are not automatically transferred from Dimensioning Rules to Smart Dimensions. If you were using these options previously, you’ll need to recreate the corresponding settings in the Global Geometry tab.
Batch Create Floorplans and Views of Rooms/ Spaces
This update brings key improvements to the Views functionality, making it easier for architects and engineers to create and manage large numbers of standardized views in Revit.
Views (from Smart Views) can create multiple tagged and dimensioned views for selected elements. This update brings new features.
What’s new
Batch-create floorplans
In addition to Detail Views and Sections, you can now batch create Floorplans. This allows quick creation of detailed floorplans for selected elements.Support for Rooms and Spaces.
Rooms and Space categories have been added to the list of supported elements. When using the Views functionality, the created views will be sized and placed according to the dimensions of the selected Rooms/Spaces.
Combined, these improvements allow you to quickly generate standardized views (elevations, sections, and floorplans) for multiple Rooms/Spaces at once:
Conclusion
The current update of Smart Documentation add-on for Revit, part of all Be.Smart Collections, focuses on simplifying documentation workflows while expanding automation for both fabrication and architectural use cases in Revit.
By reducing configuration complexity, improving performance, and consolidating previously separate tools into a single workflow, this update helps teams create consistent, high-quality documentation with less effort.
We encourage you to explore the new features and adjust your configurations where needed.
As always, your feedback helps guide future improvements - don’t hesitate to reach out with questions or suggestions.
